JavaScript is a platform-independent, event-driven, interpreted client-side scripting language developed by Netscape. Initially, it was called LiveScript (beta release) but soon it was renamed and called JavaScript when it's the first version 1.0 was released. Its latest version is 1.8.5 (released in July 2010). It follows the ECMAScript standard. Now, JavaScript is a trademark of Oracle Corporation.

JavaScript is also a spontaneous and rewarding language which is especially important when you are just getting started with software development. The community support is very good, hence due to that reason, JavaScript becomes the primary choice for the current era apps as it has the support of multiple platforms such as mobile apps, desktop, and the web application, thus using the knowledge of JavaScript, the developers can craft the application in no time.

Today, JavaScript is most commonly used by all browsers to manipulate HTML elements, validate input, and communicate with servers, and so on. JavaScript is a case-sensitive language and almost everything in JavaScript is an object.

ECMA Script

ECMAScript is a scripting language standard developed by Ecma International. This standard is widely followed by client-side scripting languages on the Web such as JavaScript, JScript, and ActionScript. The current ES version has been released in 2019 whereas ES6 was released in Jun-2015.

The Javascript ES6 has been around for many years now, and it allows us to write the code in a smart way which basically makes the code more modern, modular, and more readable compared to others. The features of ES have been evolved so much in a way that writing JavaScript code becomes easier than ever, hence the term ‘write less, do more’ definitely complements ES6 effectively.

ES6+ introduced tons of new features like restructuring, promises, arrow functions, template literals, default parameters, generators, and many more features are there.

JavaScript VS JScript

JScript is another version of JavaScript developed by Microsoft. It was released with Internet Explorer 3.0 and based on Netscape JavaScript. Its latest version is 9.0 (released in Mar 2011 which is a stable version as of now). The main difference between JavaScript and JScript is that JScript supports some additional commands to access ActiveX and the local computer as compared to JavaScript. Also, these commands are intended for use on intranet sites and the browser Internet Explorer.

In many other cases, JScript behaves differently from JavaScript, suppose you have a variable and element on the page having the same ID as given below.

var temp = 'Hello JavaScript';
document.getElementById('temp').innerHTML = temp;

In JavaScript, this code will run without error but JScript gives an error since JScript does not recognize the difference between variable temp and element having Id temp. JScript treats both of them as a single object.

Difference between JavaScript and JScript

There is a certain difference between JScript and JavaScript which are given below.

  • JScript is only supported by Internet explorer only while by using JavaScript, we can write browser-compatible code for multiple browsers
  • Active content can be crafted by JScript but JavaScript does not support it
  • JScript supports an object given by internet explorer whereas JavaScript does not have any access to such objects
  • JScript is an open implementation of Netscape's JavaScript and JavaScript a scripting language developed by Netscape Communications
  • Both JavaScript and JScript support on client-side
